‘63’ Bayswater Road and how it all began
January 5th 1946 was a decisive date in the history of Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland. At the November 1946 Conference this recommendation was endorsed and a Premises Committee was tasked with securing premises which could provide –
- Office accommodation
- Opportunities for members to meet together
- Cloakroom accommodation and catering facilities
- Hotel accommodation for visiting Soroptimists
It was decided that the best way to provide the finances was by the formation of a Society to which members of the Federation could contribute by subscribing for shares to ensure that the property, when acquired, would be owned by the members and controlled by a Committee of Management of 9 members.
In June 1948 63 Bayswater Road was inspected – a terraced Victorian residence overlooking Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, close to Lancaster Gate Tube Station, and an unrestricted freehold property!
On to 1966 - an appeal was launched for the complete reconstruction of ‘63’ to be spread over five years. The interior of the house was changed but the skill of the Architect ensured that the best possible use was made of the space without losing any of the historical or architectural interest.
The Italian wrought steel window on the ground floor which always arouses interest not only by guests but also passers-by continues to be much admired. A lift was installed and a complete suite of offices was provided for the Federation on the top floor. Several London clubs and other organisations used the Boardroom for meetings and social functions.
Since that time many further changes have taken place at ‘63’
Now there are 16 rooms all with en suite facilities, a bar with a selection of spirits and wines, there is a state of the art kitchen with a modern servery, a new lift has been installed and all rooms are furnished and decorated frequently.
The Meeting Room is equipped with the latest technology and it is used by many notable companies and organisations.
63 is now a commercial entity in its own right and is AA ★★★ Gold Guest Accommodation rated.
